From December 12, 2024, to March 4, 2025
This is the second exhibition in the PATIO program at Galería Pelaires, titled Cut & Fold. On this occasion, two recent sculptures by the artist Richard Deacon (Bangor, Wales, 1949) are on display. The works, Twofold Way CD (Black) (2021) and Cut & Fold #3 (2023) are made of stainless steel, a material that Deacon employs to explore the relationship between form, space, and materiality. In these works, sheets of stainless steel are cut, folded and assembled, with the joints and construction processes deliberately left visible. These sculptures stand out for their interplay between modularity and fluidity, inviting viewers to reflect on the dynamics between the interior and exterior spaces they create.
Richard Deacon is known for his experimental approach and his use of a wide range of materials, including wood, stainless steel, clay, plastic, and leather, among others. Throughout his career, he has developed a unique sculptural language that focuses on the intrinsic properties of materials and how they are transformed through processes such as folding, assembling, or manipulating. Deacon describes to himself as a "fabricator," and in his work, joints, screws, and seams are often left exposed, emphasizing the honesty of the material and its direct relationship to sculptural forms. Although seemingly abstract, they present undulating, organic forms that suggest the anatomical without collapsing into the recognisable, inviting multiple interpretations.
Born in 1949 in Bangor, Wales, Richard Deacon studied at Somerset College of Art, St. Martins School of Art, and the Royal College of Art in London. His work has been widely recognized with prestigious awards, including the Turner Prize in 1987, and he has been honored with distinctions such as the Order of the British Empire (1996) and Royal Academician in the United Kingdom (1998). Deacon has held professorships at leading institutions such as the École Normale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris and the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. His sculptures have been exhibited in major institutions worldwide, including Tate, MoMA, Centre Pompidou, Museo Reina Sofía, and Kunstmuseum Basel.
He currently lives and works in London.
This Project is organised in collaboration with Galerie Thomas Schulte.
