Echoes of Form
Albrecht Schnider

From March 22 to May 29, 2025

Albrecht Schnider (Lucerne, Switzerland, 1958) lives and works near Bern, Switzerland. He graduated from the Hochschule für Gestaltung and the University of Bern in 1987. Working across painting, drawing, and small-scale sculpture, Schnider's practice balances spontaneity with meticulous planning.

Schnider's paintings exhibit a restrained elegance, originating from swiftly sketched drawings made at the end of each studio day—products of a spontaneous and intuitive approach. His complex image construction process is both creative and constructive, evolving from the dialogically linked act of drawing and the analysis of shape to the selection of color and form. Abstract, organically and geometrically shaped fields of color are superimposed onto monochrome backgrounds, oscillating between figure and ground, positive and negative space. The interplay of contiguity and overlap in his compositions challenges perception, prompting the viewer to question whether they are seeing fragmented forms or layered voids within a three-dimensional pictorial window.

Echoes of Form, the title of his first individual exhibition at Pelaires, is based on key themes in Albrecht Schnider's work—his exploration of shape, perception, and the interplay between spontaneity and structure. "Echoes" suggests the iterative process in his practice, where initial sketches evolve into meticulously composed paintings. "Form" references geometric and organic abstractions, which oscillate between figure and void.

He has received numerous grants and awards, including Eidgenössisches Kunststipendium (1989, 1990, and 1992), Istituto Svizzero in Rome (1990), and the Manor-Kunstpreis of Lucerne (1994). Schnider held a professorship at the Hochschule der Künste in Bern between 2005 and 2021.

Important institutional solo exhibitions include: Kunstmuseum Thun (2021), Helmhaus Zurich (2014), Haus am Waldsee Berlin (2011), Kunstmuseum Solothurn (2011), Aargauer Kunsthaus (2006), Kunstraum Oktogon Bern (2005). Significant group exhibitions include: Helmhaus Zurich (2017), Kunsthalle Bern (2016), Kunstmuseum Luzern (2016), Galleria d'Arte Moderna Milan (2015), Weserburg Museum für Moderne Kunst Bremen (2015), Bonnefantenmuseum (2014), Kunstmuseum Bern (2013), Kunstmuseum Dieselkraftwerk Cottbus (2012), Kunsthalle Bremen (2012), Kunsthalle zu Kiel (2010), Nietzsche-Haus, Sils-Maria (2009/10), Kunstverein Lübeck (2008).

Schnider's works are held in major public collections, including Kunsthaus Zurich, Kunstmuseum Bern, Kunstmuseum Luzern, Musée cantonal des Beaux-Arts Lausanne, Kupferstichkabinett Berlin, and Swarovski in Austria.

La Galeria Pelaires ha rebut una subvenció del Consell de Mallorca per a la realització d'aquesta exposició.
