The artist Diego Delas joins renowned creators at the Art Explora Festival, a free, traveling cultural event that tours the Mediterranean aboard the world's first museum ship. This festival, led by the Art Explora Foundation and curated by Rosa Lleó and Álex Martín, makes its final stop of 2024 in Málaga, from October 31 to November 10.
The festival's main venue is a museum ship docked at IGY Málaga Marina, at Pier One of the Port of Málaga, with a daily visitor capacity of 2,000 and in collaboration with the Louvre Museum and the Ircam x Centre Pompidou. The immersive experience includes a virtual reality gallery on the golden ages of Venice, Athens, and Alexandria, an audio journey through the Mediterranean, and a documentary on the representation of women in Mediterranean art.
Each day at 4:30 pm, Diego Delas will present the performance "El susurro del mar", in front of the museum ship, beginning with the arrival of a catamaran at the port at sunset. This poetic procession moves from Muelle 1 to the Auditorio Eduardo Ocón, offering a visual homage to the relationship between humanity and the Mediterranean, with banners made of natural fabrics inspired by the sea and Mediterranean symbols.
As part of the scheduled activities at the Auditorio Eduardo Ocón, on Saturday, November 2 at 5:30 pm, the film "El susurro del mar", a collaboration between Leonor Serrano Rivas and Diego Delas, will be screened. This immersive work takes as its starting point "Breathings of the Moon" (2022), an exploration of the Venetian lagoon, and expands to examine the Mediterranean's underwater ecosystem. Filmed on 16mm, the film seeks to explore the ethical and technical complexities of water through a narrative that combines artistic and scientific perspectives. The work not only documents the beauty and fragility of the marine ecosystem but also addresses topics like the exploitation of natural resources and the environmental dilemmas affecting these waters. It invites viewers to immerse themselves in this space and reflect on our relationship with the sea and its depths, revealing the invisible threads that connect humanity to the ocean.
Immediately after, at 6:00 pm in the same Auditorium, a conversation titled "Sobre nuestros orígenes pegajosos. Confluencias entre arte y ciencia" will take place between artists Leonor Serrano Rivas, Diego Delas, and biologist Dr. Juan Pascual Anaya, moderated by writer and curator Bernardo José de Souza. This conversation focuses on how both fields, although from different perspectives, share a drive to imagine, investigate, and speculate on the mysteries of life and nature. This dialogue does not seek definitive answers but instead plays with the idea that both art and science operate in that space where the imagined and the real intertwine, continuously expanding the boundaries of what we think we know.
The festival extends to venues such as La Térmica - Center for Contemporary Culture of the Diputación de Málaga and Astilleros Nereo, with a program that includes performances, music, film, and talks by artists such as Perrate, Yinka Esi Graves, Eduard Escoffet, Isidora O'Ryan, Antonio R. Montesinos, Jumana Manna, and many more.
Organized in collaboration with the Málaga City Council and the Málaga Port Authority, the festival places Málaga at the heart of sustainability and artistic inclusion in the Mediterranean, inviting everyone to explore the cultural and historical connections of the region in a reflective way. The complete program, as well as mediation activities for families and schools, is available on the official Art Explora website.
