Pelaires opens for the first time at ARCO LISBON
The fair is taking place from 17-20 May, with the participation of 50 galleries which have been selected from the overall programme, plus 8 from the “Opening” section.
On our gallery’s stand, A01, you have the chance to see works by Jason Martin, Frank Nitsche, Nicholas Woods, Rafa Munárriz and Lucas Simões. This last artist, from Brazil, is exhibiting at Pelaires for the first time and from December he will form part of the portfolio of artists represented by the Gallery.
Pelaires is participating for the first time in the Lisbon ARCO, the art fair that is taking place between the 17th and the 20th of this month. 50 galleries will be exhibiting in the general programme and 8 in the Opening. On our gallery’s stand you’ll be able to see works by Jason Martin, Frank Nitsche, Nicholas Woods, Rafa Munárriz and Lucas Simões.
The director of the Pelaires Gallery, Frederic Pinya, points out that, “we have come to the Lisbon ARCO full of enthusiasm. It is the first time that we have participated in this fair and we are doing so with a selection of artists who truly represent our line of work in recent times and, above all, who are setting the standard for the direction we are taking in this process of change in which we are immersed. This means an essential presence in international fairs”. In 2018, Pelaires has already been in Zona Maco (Mexico), ARCO and now this most recent event, ARCO Lisbon.
As far as featured artists and their works are concerned, Pinya highlights the presence of the Brazilian artist Lucas Simões, who they are working with at this fair for the first time, and who will also be part of the artists represented by Pelaires from this December. His works in cement, paper and metal sculptures reflect his interest in architecture and design, two fields that he has studied both in Brazil and in Italy. At ARCO Lisbon, 4 of his sculptures will be on display. These show how the artist explores the material as a way of expression, an investigation where technique and poetics are deeply interrelated.
Pinya goes on to highlight the presence of Jason Martin; “One of the greatest British artists today, a key artist in the gallery and one who has direct ties to Portugal – his studio is located just a few kilometres from the fair. We are bringing one of his works that is along the lines of what was exhibited in Zona Maco”.
Frank Nitsche is one of Pelaires’s most recent signings, and until May 31st the artist’s first solo exhibition in Spain can be seen at the gallery. Lisbon will display two large-scale works (220 x 200 cm) in addition to a series of 5 pieces, as well as smaller oil paintings. These 7 Nitsche works are a fine example of his recent work, a type of very elaborate and sophisticated abstraction.
Pelaires has always supported artists from the islands, also promoting their presence at international fairs. It is for this reason, and to broaden the exposure of his latest work, that the Gallery has opted for Nicholas Woods, with a series of 5 pastel works and a large format work made in acrylic, wood and nails. The latter is a work that belongs to an older series that he has taken up again and has converted into his new iconography, and which is linked to the work of the last year in which exotic images of flora and fauna appear, a kind of imaginary world.
Regarding Rafa Munárriz, one of the objectives of the Gallery is to show work by young artists and accompany them in the early years of their career. This is why, since he first appeared at Pelaires, this artist has been at all the fairs in which the Gallery has participated. Munarriz resides in São Paulo thanks to having won one of the well-known Botín Foundation scholarships. In fact, in the history of scholarship, he is the youngest artist to have won it. In Lisbon he will present 40 laser drawings directly related to the work present in Santander, as well as two works along the lines of the last two years (a redesigned traffic sign and a number of his well-known circuits).
